Description of Scheme

VTOS Enquiry Form

The Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme is an educational opportunities scheme for unemployed persons which is funded by the Department of Education and Science with assistance from the European Social Fund. The Scheme is operated through the Vocational Education Committees and provides a special range of courses designed to meet the education and training needs of unemployed people.

The aims of the scheme are

  • to give unemployed people education and training opportunities which will develop their employability
  • to prepare people to go into paid employment or on to further opportunities leading to paid employment
VTOS Eligibility Requirements
  • VTOS, aged 21 and over and be in receipt of unemployment payment for 156 days (6 months).
VTOS Programme Supports
  • Receive VTOS training allowance at a rate equivalent to the Jobseeker’s Benefit instead of your jobseeker’s payment.
  • VTOS participants under 26 who move from an age-related reduced rate of Jobseeker’s Allowance will get a rate of €160 per week.
  • VTOS training allowance and work: If you are returning to your course for a second year, you will continue to get your VTOS allowance during the summer months. You can also take up full-time work during the summer months and your VTOS payment is not affected.
