Earlier this year, four St Catherine’s Vocational School (Killybegs) students, Amy Rawdon, Catherine Byrne, Holly Meehan and Kayla Boyle, won the national Certified Irish Angus Schools Competition, in association with ABP and Kepak.
At the recent National Ploughing Championships, they collected their prize of five calves to look after for the year ahead.
Their hard work for this demanding competition began back in March and their commitment, teamwork and enthusiasm has now been rewarded as they have successfully won five Certified Irish Angus calves for their school.
This now marks the beginning of another exciting chapter for the team. Over the coming year, the students will rear the calves while undertaking an extensive educational and research project, using their experience to explore farming, sustainability and educating the future of Irish agriculture.
The competition provides students with a unique opportunity to combine classroom learning with real-life agricultural experience, while developing valuable skills in research, communication, teamwork and project management.
The students were guided in their work by their teacher, Niall Canning.
This has been a tremendous achievement for Kayla, Amy, Holly and Catherine and a very proud moment for the entire St Catherine’s Vocational School community, which now look forward to following the journey of the five calves over the year ahead.
